Under severe plastic deformation (SPD), the phase transformations are often observed, which are accompanied by accelerated mass transfer. In aluminum, copper, and titanium alloys, an equilibrium was observed between the formation and decomposition of a supersaturated solid solution during SPD. In this case, accelerated mass transfer of the atoms of the matrix and the dissolved component occurs. Estimates of the effective diffusion coefficient for such mass transfer caused by SPD were carried out. It was found that the effective diffusion coefficient Deq at SPD is 8-12 orders of magnitude higher than the values of the bulk thermal diffusion coefficient Dv at the temperature of SPD experiment (usually 300 K). This is most likely due to the high content of lattice defects in the stationary state that occurs during SPD. Thus, the Deq value observed during the SPD at TSPD = 300 K is comparable to the Dv value at some effective temperature Teff, which is much higher than the temperature of the SPD experiment TSPD. We recently developed an installation for low-energy, high-current ion implantation using a Hall-current accelerator. In particular, it enables the implantation of oxygen and nitrogen ions at current densities which several orders of magnitude higher than those achieved with standard ion implantation methods. Consequently, for instance, the penetration depth of oxygen ions into titanium at an energy of 1 keV is approximately 20 micrometers in our setup, compared to the standard 20 nanometers. We believe there is a certain similarity between deformation-induced and ion-induced mass transport under conditions far from equilibrium. Therefore, this new process can be called, similar to SPD, severe ion implantation.References
